Viki streams Oniisama e (Brother dear brother) legally. OMG.

Things that Sparkle in Oniisama e: Kaoru’s Righteous Fury

Things that Sparkle in Oniisama e: evil spiky combs!

Things that Sparkle in Oniisama e: evil spiky combs!

Of course one of the big things about shojo manga and anime is clothes, and showing them off is a big part of a lot of series. It’s leaping out at me as especially obvious, though, in Oniisama e; more or less every time a character appears in a new outfit (once or twice an episode in the case of, for example, Nanako and Mariko) we get a pan shot of them to make sure we get the whole thing. Pan shots are also great for older anime since hoorah, saving money on animation; but it turns into a feature when it’s used like this.

(Shots pieced together from series of screencaps.)

(Two images: left, Rei from Oniisama e sits in a dark room and smokes. Right, Kaoru from Oniisama e sits in the same dark room and smokes.)

So early in the series we meet Rei, hanging out in her favourite dark corner like the seekrit french poet that she is, deep in her soul. Late in the series, after Many Dramatic Events Have Transpired, we have Kaoru, who is at the point this screencap was taking having an episode of longing after lost heterosexual love. She does this, amongst other things, by going and sitting in Rei’s favorite spot and smoking a cigarette or three while thinking longingly about her. IF ONLY SHE WERE HERE. WITH ME.

Completely heterosexual goings on. Completely. Definitely not the stuff that femslash is made of.

Professional-level tackling from Shinobu Mariko (Oniisama e anime). MY FRIEND NOW. MINE. I don’t know what else to say. Oniisama e is basically the greatest hotbed of jealousy, intrigue and homoeroticism that I have ever seen.
